Spain has begun temporary border checks on travelers arriving from Italy by air and sea, in response to Italy’s own controls on arrivals from Spain. The checks, which include document verification, will be in place until Sept. 7. This comes after a surge of migrants entered Ceuta from Morocco, leading to Italy’s restrictions on non-EU nationals arriving from Spain. Spain called Italy’s measures unjustified and discriminatory, while Italy stated they would maintain their controls until the risk subsided. The Schengen Area permits temporary border controls in cases of public policy or security threats.
